My Teaching Philosophy
In the classroom, I strive to have Discipline-Specific Knowledge and Skills. Students will be able to understand character analysis, projecting their voices, improvising, script interpretation, and being able to work collaboratively with a group of people. In the rehearsal space, I aim to give students Personal Development. Onstage this involves students being able to have more confidence in speaking skills, work well collaboratively, reduce stage fright, and improve listening skills. This can be seen in multiple rehearsals, multiple scenes where a group of people are on stage together, outside of class work on scenes, and director notes that they must listen to and apply to themselves/ their scenes. Because these skills will heavily impact how they will perform on and off stage.
In the classroom, I teach Basic Academic Success Skills. This involves time management, note-taking, reading comprehension, active listening, taking constructive criticism, analyzing and interpreting scripts, and teamwork. This can be seen by classroom time being used to read a script as a class, students taking critical notes after a rehearsal, students writing down the notes/ instructions they are given, and students working together on scenes during class time. Because learning these skills is not only beneficial for the stage but also for their own lives.
In the classroom, I give Work and Career Preparation. This is done through students learning skills through my acting classes, and participating in mass productions with various roles to expand their capability of playing different types of roles. Along with my technical theater class where students develop technical skills in areas of the theater that are off-stage like set design, lighting, sound, costumes, and building a portfolio. This is valuable to me as an educator because students should be able to have these skills when they are sent out to the “real world” so that they already know the skills for the fields they are pursuing.
In the classroom, I aim to teach Liberal Arts and Academic Values. This is done in my classroom by me as an educator teaching students about ethics, curiosity, cultural awareness and appropriation, diversity, and critical thinking. I as an instructor believe that it’s very important to have students understand the value and importance of one’s culture, especially if we are to perform a play that is heavily impacted by the culture of the characters in the play.
